This is a superb, highly detailed model of the famous 'Tornado' Locomotive.

Originally forty-nine Peppercorn Class A1s were built for British Railways in 1948-9. They were designed for the heavy trains and limited resources of the late 40s and early 50s. In September 1945 Edward Thompson rebuilt Sir Nigel Gresley's first Pacific Class locomotive, the 'Great Northern'.  When Thompson placed an order for sixteen of these locomotives to be built in 1945, the LNER's last Chief Mechanical Engineer, Arthur Peppercorn, further refined the design of the locomotive. In August 1948 the first locomotive in the Peppercorn A1 Class, the W.P. Allen, No. 60114, entered service. Another forty-eight Peppercorn Class locomotives were built by the end of 1949, the last of the class being No. 60162, the Saint Johnstoun.

These were supebly reliable, powerful and low maintenance locomotives. They had a 50sq foot grate which allowed them to operate with the low grade coal available in the post war period. The final five Peppercorn locomotives built were equipped with roller bearings which enabled them to travel an average of 118,000 miles between heavy repairs. This made the Peppercorn A1s the most economical to run of all British steam locomotives in the same category. They were easily the most reliable of all of the express passenger steam locomotives operated by British Railways.
The last of the renowned Peppercorn class 'A1' steam locomotives, No. 60145 Saint Mungo was withdrawn from service and scrapped in 1966.

HOWEVER!!!  The story of the Peppercorn Class locomotives did not end there!  In 1990 a group of steam enthusiasts hatched a remarkable dream - the construction of a brand new Peppercorn A1 Pacific Class Locomotive!  The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust was formed and after nineteen years of remarkable dedication and effort, the Peppercorn A1 Class Tornado No. 60163 moved under its own steam power for the first time in 2008. Fitted with additional water capacity and the latest railway safety electronics, Tornado is fully equipped for today’s main line railway and is a regular feature on British mainlines and is a wonderful attraction for tourists and steam enthusiast alike.
This superb Hornby locomotive is a wonderful model of the Tornado - representing a marvellous achievement in the history of Steam locomotion.
