This is a superb, highly detailed model of the famous 'Tornado' Locomotive.
Originally forty-nine Peppercorn Class A1s were built for British Railways in 1948-9. They were designed for the heavy trains and limited resources of the late 40s and early 50s. In September 1945 Edward Thompson rebuilt Sir Nigel Gresley's first Pacific Class locomotive, the 'Great Northern'. When Thompson placed an order for sixteen of these locomotives to be built in 1945, the LNER's last Chief Mechanical Engineer, Arthur Peppercorn, further refined the design of the locomotive. In August 1948 the first locomotive in the Peppercorn A1 Class, the W.P. Allen, No. 60114, entered service. Another forty-eight Peppercorn Class locomotives were built by the end of 1949, the last of the class being No. 60162, the Saint Johnstoun.
