The GWR County Class Locomotives were a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives built for Express Passenger train services. Forty of the 38XX Class 4-4-0 locomotives were built between 1904 and 1912. The last was withdrawn from service in 1933 and, sadly, all were scrapped and none have survived into preservation. These superb locomotives were designed by George Jackson Churchward.
The 38XX County Class were the last new GWR 4-4-0 design and by far the most modern, with inside frames and outside cylinders. Eventually they were found to have a front end too powerful for the wheel arrangement and all were withdrawn by the early 1930s. Part of the reason for their design was so they could run on the Hereford to Shrewsbury LNWR line over which the GWR had running powers, but on which they were forbidden to use 4-6-0 locomotives. The 4-4-0 County Class locomotives were very much like a shortened version of the GWR's 2900 Class locomotives - providing a powerful engine but in a 4-4-0 version.
No. 3818 - the County of Radnor - was built in December 1906 and was withdrawn from service in August 1931.
This Superbly Detailed Locomotive will add Charm and Romance to your Model Railway.
