June Competition winner...and a short history of the Mallard!

Congratulations to our first Competition winner - Ash from Victoria. Ash won a $100.00 gift voucher for use on the Papamallard website for correctly answering that the Mallard was coloured Blue when it first entered service in March 1938. Specifically, the Mallard was Garter Blue with Red Wheels in 1938. Designed for speed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the famous LNER Number 4468 Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific Locomotive also spent part of its life painted green and part of its working life painted black. The Mallard was retired from service in 1963 and now stands as one of the premier exhibits in the Railway Museum in York in its original Garter Blue livery. During its working life the Mallard covered almost one and a half million miles (2.4 million km). Of course the Mallard is most famous for holding the world speed record for steam locomotion, achieving a top speed of 126mph on 3rd July 1938.
